Linh & Tommy: Vietnamese Betrothal

We love celebrating events from different cultures, and no event is too intimate or to large for us to carefully document at Igor Wedding Photography.

The event featured here is a Vietnamese Engagement dinner, also known as a Betrothal ceremony, they had this special event at their parents home in Irving, TX, this ceremony is a public announcement that the couple is preparing to marry and that the focus is on each other and usually combined with an engagement party (le dinh hon). It began with future bride Linh changing into a beautiful hot pink dress, traditionally worn at Vietnamese ceremonies called an ao dai, her really close friends dressed similarly but in different vibrant colors, they prepared the table with Vietnamese cookies and traditional Asian sweets.

Guest began to arrive, and they exchanged endearments, it also included the exchange of several symbolic gifts wrapped in red for good luck and a time to receive blessings from both families. Gifts often include Asian areca nuts, betel leaves, tea, cake, fruits, wines, a roasted pig, and other delicacies that are beautifully arranged and carried by unmarried women and men to the future bride’s home. If the future bride’s parents accept the gifts, it's a sign that they approve of the upcoming marriage between the couple.

After the gifts are accepted, the future bride was walked down the hallway by her parents, it was a beautiful moment that we were honored to be able to capture. The couple proceeds to light incense for the ancestors and serve tea to the elders for both families. Usually then the bride would prepare a feast for both families at their parents home, but in our couples case they just went out to for a restaurant dinner afterwards!
